A new process has been developed compared to Syncros Silverton SL allowing the removal of the carbon hub shell which was used as a spacer between the flanges. The removal of this carbon hub shell delivers two advantages. First, it means fewer parts resulting in a lower weight. Secondly, the smaller hub diameter and flanges improves aero performance. This is possible by combining the pre-tensioning of the spokes and the bonding of the bearing tube into a single process.

After curing, the spokes are pre-tensioned by an enforced displacement of the flanges followed by inserting and bonding of the bearing tube. A high precision jig ensures the correct and uniform spokes pre-tension.

From the outset, our engineers considered a range of riding conditions to deliver the optimum Aero Performance for the Capital SL. Riding speed, Wind Speed and Wind Direction were all considered from the beginning. The unique monocoque design delivers a 7% aero savings compared to our benchmark – even with a wider tire. As the wheel was developed as a system – wheel and tire together – we were able to balance Aero Performance with Rolling Resistance delivering the fastest overall system in all situations.

AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) optimization

Almost 200 configurations of the Capital SL wheel have been simulated with CFD technology, each of them at several different yaw angles. Shape optimizations of the rim geometry have enabled us to reduce the separation of the rim section at high yaw angles. This leads to a drag reduction and makes the wheel more predictable in windy conditions.

Wind Tunnel Testing

To optimize Aerodynamic savings, we took the unique one-piece design with carbon fiber spokes into the wind tunnel. Using a purpose built system that has been designed to measure the rotational and translational drag, we tested the designs for all-new Capital SL Aero and Capital SL.

To test the different rim shape configurations, we developed a specific metal rim with the same rim bed geometry as the final rim which is mounted on a prototyped model that accurately represents the outer shape.The spokes are modeled to have the same shape that the final wheel has.

The Capital SL Aero and Capital SL outperform the tested competitor wheels. The closest competitor is nearly 7% slower.

Low rotational inertia is a key factor in reducing response time of a wheelset in a sprint or acceleration. Our modern construction process lowers the weight around the rim and concentrates it around the hub. This unique process shows a 20% reduction in rotational inertia for the Capital SL wheels when compared to competitors. A lower rotational inertia means less power needed to get up to speed and a faster response to every effort.

Stiffness optimization is closely correlated to the handling feeling of a rider, and as such. is an area of focus. We drastically worked on this key component to ensure the best performance and feeling in all riding conditions.

As a result of our patented Monocoque Wheel System technology (MWS) and our unique pre-straining process, we achieve a higher spoke tension compared to competitor carbon spoked wheels. This delivers a livelier and more responsive wheel, whether descending or climbing your favorite mountain pass. Our carbon spokes weigh less than traditional steel spokes yet are 35% stronger. Unlike traditional spoke fixation, the Capital SL’s spokes are bonded directly to the rim and runs from the rim over the flange to the other side of the rim while being woven at the intersection, increasing and optimizing torsional stiffness. You can turn faster and more precisely in every riding conditions.

HOOKLESS TECHNOLOGY

With a hookless design, the rim's structure is improved, resulting in a stronger and lighter rim. Aerodynamically, the absence of the hooks leads to a smoother transition from the tire to the rim, which reduces drag. The hookless bead provides increased impact protection and reduced pinch-flats, especially for gravel use. The internal width of 25mm is optimized for the best compromise between aerodynamic drag and reduced rolling resistance with wider tires.

The Capital SL wheels were developed looking at the wheel as a system including the tire and its rolling resistance. This led to the adaptation of wider tires offering lower rolling resistance.

Obviously, a wider tire and rim combination provides more sail area than a narrower set-up. This impact is especially important for the front-wheel as the first attacking point of wind. The rear wheel and tire are mostly isolated from wind turbulence, due to the bike-frame and movement of the legs. Considering these different behaviors, it was the aim to co-develop a specific front and rear-tire with a strong partner, Schwalbe. The all-new Pro One Aero front tire is designed with the most aerodynamic shape on modern rims, while the Pro One Aero rear tire is dedicated to low rolling-resistance with plenty of durability.

Tire Compatibility

Tubeless and Hookless technologies require compatible tires. We have worked with the biggest tire manufacturers to ensure tire/rim compatibility for road performance and gravel tires. If your Syncros Capital SL wheel becomes damaged by a crash in a non-repairable way and the wheel cannot be used anymore you will have the possibility to take advantage of a special rate on a new wheel.

This offer is eligible for the first owner of the wheel up to 3 years from the purchase date. Depending on the age of the wheel, Syncros will offer you the following discounts:

  • In the first year after the date of purchase a 50% reduction is offered on the official retail price.
  • In the second year 30%.
  • In the third year a 20% discount.

The Capital SL wheels are also covered by a 2 year statutory warranty.
